A gentle circular walk from starting point to finishing point. The walk is along sandy / dirt tracks
through wooded areas and open agricultural land (grape vines, fruit trees etc). Some tarmac will be
waked for a short stretch. While the walk is within yelling distance of the lagoon, the lagoon is not
insight at any time during the walk. This walk is neither long nor arduous, but maybe extended a little on the day.

Walk largely follows PR4 TVD – Rota do Castro The Rota do Castro do Zambujal is a circular route with a length of about 13 km.
Fabulous loop south of Torres Vedras with historic site along the way. Mostly on country roads with some good ascents and descents for camino training and a charming town or two.  Some unmanicured, prickly, single file sections, challenging for dogs and shorter clothing. Castro do Zambujal is a fortified Copper Age or Chalcolithic settlement dating from the 3rd millennium BC. For more information, see link: https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/pr-4-tvd-rota-do-castro-do-zambujal-16077304?utm_medium=app&utm_campaign=share&utm_source=15660503

We are planning for a 20 minute break for exploration and snacks at the historic site.

Car sharing/pooling – due to limited parking at the walk start point, if possible, please go to the car share meeting point for 9:10am behind Good Mart in Caldas da Rainha – GPS coordinates 39.40742586077, -9.153011602699.

It is recommended that dogs are not brought on this walk, however, if they do attend, please keep them on a short lead (including at the archeological site). Poles are useful for those that need them, especially if it’s been raining. Please bring water and any snacks you will need during the hike.

Parishes Walk – Foz do Arelho and Serra do Bouro (foz12S)

The Walk

A walk through woodland and tracks via Zambujeiro

From a subdued start at the Foz cemetery, the walk picks up pace as it courses through the dirt-packed, tree lined path toward the Variante Atlântica (Atalantic road).  After a brief stop at the curbside, the walk continues on the other side of the Variante Atlântica with a fairly steep climb up to the grassy plateau above Foz and Serra.   On the plateau, walkers meander along dirt/sand/grass tracks before descending to the hamlet of Zambujeiro.  After a short interlude on tarmac, the walk then returns to a dirt, tree lined track and climbs back-up to the plateau, passing a picturesque spot with a Parque de Merendas (picnic park) with running stream.  The walk is circular, returning to Foz via a different track from the walk start, and descends steeply back into Foz. The track, in parts, could be muddy and puddled if rain has fallen recently; as a result, walking sticks may help those who rely on them.

Timing

The walk is about 7 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs
