The Walk

A short circular route in the parish of Benedita

This is one of the walks listed on the Percursos Pedestres em Terras de Cister for the Alcobaca Municipality (PR9 ACB-CLD).

It starts and ends at Praça Dr Jose Damasceno Campos, near the center of Benedita. It goes towards Fonte da Senhora and passes by Casal da Azenha. You will enjoy the landscape, among vegetation, water courses, cultivated fields, panoramic views over Vale da Franca, Vila da Benedita and Serra dos Candeeiros.

It’s called the biodiversity walk because it provides a sense of the existing natural flora, fauna and habitats. You will encounter a good variety of native flora such as cork oak, laurel, willow, maritime pine, Portuguese oak, strawberry tree, some chestnut trees and ash trees. Fauna such as wild boar, wild rabbit, mongoose, badger, turtledove, partridge, kite and blackbird, and even recently the red squirrel, populate this area.

Circular walk near Pedra de Ouro (NAZ12S)

The Walk

Through countryside near Pedra do Ouro, and back along the coastline

The walk starts through the streets of Pedra do Ouro, crosses the main road and into woodland following well marked sandy tracks. We follow more tracks into some open countryside following sandy tracks, with some up and down slopes before re-crossing the main road and follow a short path back to the coastline. There are good views of the countryside and coastline at times, which of course is always enhanced by good weather. Finally, we descend on a short but steep hill back to the streets of Pedra do Ouro and make our way back to the meeting point. Some of the paths maybe slippery after wet weather and poles are recommended for those who need them. In warm weather be sure to protect yourself from the sun as a fair proportion of the walk is unshaded.

Timing

The walk is about 6 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs
