Parishes Walk – Foz do Arelho and Serra do Bouro (foz12S)

The Walk

A walk through woodland and tracks via Zambujeiro

From a subdued start at the Foz cemetery, the walk picks up pace as it courses through the dirt-packed, tree lined path toward the Variante Atlântica (Atalantic road).  After a brief stop at the curbside, the walk continues on the other side of the Variante Atlântica with a fairly steep climb up to the grassy plateau above Foz and Serra.   On the plateau, walkers meander along dirt/sand/grass tracks before descending to the hamlet of Zambujeiro.  After a short interlude on tarmac, the walk then returns to a dirt, tree lined track and climbs back-up to the plateau, passing a picturesque spot with a Parque de Merendas (picnic park) with running stream.  The walk is circular, returning to Foz via a different track from the walk start, and descends steeply back into Foz. The track, in parts, could be muddy and puddled if rain has fallen recently; as a result, walking sticks may help those who rely on them.

Timing

The walk is about 7 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs

The Walk

A circular walk from the church in Alvados to Sao Bento, and then back via a different route

The walk starts at the church (“Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação, Alvados) in the village and is signposted (as PR3.1) to Sao Bento. It starts with a fairly steep ascent, along a narrow path and offers good views of the surrounding countryside. Then there is a fairly steady descent into the village of Sao Bento.

Having stopped briefly in the village, we then take a different route out of the village (following PR3 signs) – this is a longer, fairly steady ascent again with good scenic views. The walk concludes with a fairly steep ascent down a rocky path before strolling through the Alvados village back to the start point.

Poles and walking shoes are recommended for those who need them. Bring your own refreshments as there are no coffee stops en route.

Timing

The walk is about 14 km and is expected to take about 4 hrs.

As ruas, as vistas e a baía de São Martinho do Porto (smp11S)

The streets, the views and the bay of Sao Martinho do Porto

The circular walk is a mixture of quiet roads, tracks and boardwalk. We leave the start point and follow roads through the old town to the Gralha beach north of SMdP. From there we follow a track before before following more quietish roads to the SMdP miradouro (viewpoint). Then, we follow a road down towards the bay but branch off along an open, rocky path to the bay headland. To get to the bay itself, we descend some steepish, uneven steps which require a good degree of care, especially after wet weather. Finally, we head around the bay along more tracks and the board walk before returning to the coffee stops in the bay. Although the full walk is 9km, its very easy to finish walking after approximately 6km for those who wish to do so. Also, if there is/has been wet weather, it will be necessary to remain on the road rather than take the “rocky path to the bay headland”. Although dogs are welcome to accompany us, it is recommended that, due to the amount of roadwork on the walk, that they are kept on a lead.

From there it is a steep descent back to the village of Torrinhas before making our way back to the start point in the quiet hamlet of Fontes. Walking poles are recommended for those that need them. Nadadouro Water Tower walk (foz10S)

The Environs of Nadadouro’s Water Tower

From the water tower in Nadadouro, to the shores of the lagoon; from lagoon shore to peaks and
hamlets in the Parish. Walkers meander along sandy, tree lined tracks, branch strewn paths in
forested areas and tramp some tarmacked surfaces, while skirting agricultural allotments. A few
moderately steep gradients will be climbed, however, nothing too daunting. Remember to duck
while passing under bowed trees on the lagoon shore path. (On a previous walk some years ago,
one lady saw stars as she lay on the ground looking up at the sky). In a couple of instances, the
track doubles back on itself but for only short distances. The need to pay attention to where one
places his/her feet in the forested areas, is imperative – easy to trip and do damage. Also, it is recommended that you protect yourself from the mosquitos !!

Vale do Mogo, Chiqueda (alc04S)

Short walk between Chiqueda and Lameira on the southern outskirts of Alcobaça

The walk starts at the “Nascente” or head of the Rio Alcoa then follows a path through a wooded limestone gorge with some interesting geological features. At about the midway stage there is an uphill stretch on a country road, then through a quiet village before heading back cross country along the side of the valley and downhill to the cars. The walk can be slippery in places, especially after rain, so good footwear and walking poles (for those that need them) are recommended.

From Alcobaca, drive through Chiqueda, park next to the river at the disused factories at Poço d’Agua

From Shore to Suburbia and Back (foz09S)

A walk through tree lined tracks from Nadadouro

From the sandy shore of the lagoon to the suburban streets of Nadadouro via tree lined tracks, the walk is a relatively light stroll in the Nadadouro / Foz area.  After the start of the walk at the parking area by the Cais da Lagoa, the walk heads to a small beach and then across a small headland, where the ground underfoot may be a little damp, so good footwear advised.  The walk then turns away from the lagoon, climbing up along a tree lined dirt track to the suburban heights of Nadadouro.  Once at the top, the walk continues to meander through various types of walking surfaces.  In two brief sections, the walkers will back track on themselves.  The walk is circular, with walkers descending another tree lined track to where cars are parked.
