A ramble through the old streets of São Martinho do Porto to Praia da Gralha with stops at all the viewpoints

The Walk: The walk starts at the park on the north end of the SMdP Marginal and follows narrow streets to the plaza by the freguesia overlooking the town. From there we continue through the old streets to the Miradouro do Cruzeiro. Then we continue up Estrada do Facho to Miradouro do Facho with 270 degree views. Next we follow the coast to Praia da Gralha and the paraglider launch site. From Gralha we return to the old town, pass by the Mercado Municipal de São Martinho do Porto and the Igreja Paroquial de São Martinho do Porto. We continue on through the neighborhoods toward the Cais. We detour off of the road down to the Cais for a visit to the São Martinho Lighthouse Miradouro. At the Cais we make a quick trip through the Túnel para o Atlântico that connects the bay to the open ocean and then follow the Cais back to our starting point. This walk is mostly on quiet city streets with a few short sections of unpaved trail.
A walk through farmland, wooded hills, small villages and short sections on quiet roads. There are some slopes which will be muddy after rain. So walking poles and good foot-ware are recommended.

A circular walk from the Abandon Disco at Foz do Arelho
This 6 km short walk starts at 10 am by the old discoteque by the roundabout above Foz do Arelho. We will walk north east on dirtroads and trails till where the Rua da pedreira starts by the road to Salir de Porto some hundred meters on the road, we will start walking back by a trail till we reach the roads and follow them and trails back to the disco.
Some parts of the trails are a bit wet and slippery and there are a few short bits down and up, but not exhausting.
Please bring good shoes and poles if you dislike the slippery parts. This walk will be in the nature with very few houses. Dogs kept in short leash are very welcome.

Parking lot next to the abandon disco near the Miradouro da Foz do Arelho
The walk begins at the church in Vale de Maceira, located on the N8 between Caldas da Rainha and Alfiezerão. We follow rural roads through the village of Casal da Ponte. From there we walk along one of the many irrigation canals built in the 1600’s by the Marquis de Pombal to drain what was once the Sea of Alfeizerão. We then turn south into the farmland that was recovered from the marshy sea and follow rural roads along pastures, orchards and eucalyptus forests eventually returning to Vale de Maceira. Much of the walk is on dirt tracks that can be muddy after heavy rain.

A walk along the São Martinho do Porto beach to the Dune at Salir do Porto
This is a loop walk starting at the beachfront park in São Martinho do Porto. We walk along the beach to Salir do Porto where we ascend to the back of the Dune via a gravel road. Here we climb a sandy path to a mirador with a view of the entire bay. From the mirador we descend the dune and head back to São Martinho do Porto via the boardwalks and malanquin.
After the walk we can enjoy coffee, ice cream, or lunch at one of the beachfront cafes in São Martinho do Porto
The best place for parking is along the São Martinho do Porto Caís. The driving / parking directions below will take you to the Caís without weaving through the village’s narrow streets.

A walk through fields & forests near the village of Cortém in Vidais
This is a circular walk through the village of Cortém and the surrounding fields and forest. The walk starts and ends at the small organic winery, Vinho Cortém. Cortém is on a ridge in the parish of Vidais. The route is hilly with several UPs and DOWNs. The total elevation gain is about 110 meters.
After the walk those that register in advance can join a tour of the winery and wine tasting with snacks. The cost is €25. The winery is also offering a ‘Designated Driver’ option for those who wish to join the tour but will not want to participate in the wine tasting. To register, email Vinhos Cortém:
Parking is limited at the trailhead so carpooling is highly recommended. See below for details. If you already have a full car, feel free to go directly to the walk starting point at 10:00.

Walk Starting Point

In front of Vinhos Cortém on Rua 25 de Abril in Cortém.
There is space for 12-15 cars at the starting point. We recommend coordinating in advance to fill seats in cars as much as possible. A convenient meeting point for carpooling for this walk is the northern end of the large municipal parking lot adjacent to the Caldas da Rainha Bombieros building, near the intersection of Rua dos Bombieros and Av. Gen. Pedro Cardoso. You can use the Silver Coast Walks Facebook page to coordinate carpool partners. It takes about 15 min. to drive from this parking lot to the walk starting point.
A walk from Cela Velha to Coral de Maceda and back
The walks starts at little square in front of the old railway station of Cela Velha, from the there we follow Rua da Alcobaça for a little while and then turn right towards the monument to Humberto Delgado and then start the climb on a good trail towards Coral da Maceda.
From there we start the descent back to Cela Velha through a wooded valley in the shadow of the trees with some nice views from the area.

Driving Directions: On the N242 coming from Sao Martinho after passing Famaliçco turn right at the sign for Cela Velha. Coming from Nazaré after crossing the bridge turn left at the sign for Cela Velha. Parking: In front of the old railway station where there is a monumento to Humberto Delgdo. A short distance away on the Rua da Alcobaça (left) a larger parking area is free. Meeting Point: Meet at the statue for the start of the walk.
A circular walk from Óbidos passing through Capela de Santo Antão
Park in the free, Obidos parking lot behind Prohibition Bar and gather in the front of CGD bank. We begin our hike along the northern flank of the castle wall, cross the RR track and walk along a flat agricultural trail. We’ll skirt around Arelho, through Carregal and out to some orchards and fields near Trás do Outeiro. There’s a a final, short ascent to Capela de Santo Antão with stunning views.
NOTE: bring a mask to cover your nose. Farmers are spraying and one never knows!

Meet in front of Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD Bank) to start the walk.
This walk starts at the little church Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires – Rua da Espinheira, Serra do Bouro. We walk on small local roads , sandy paths , woodland … minimum of height differences.

A walk by the Obidos Lagoon and Praia do Bom Sucesso
We will start the walk near the end of the lagoon by the ocean. There are beautiful vistas from this point which we’ll enjoy at the beginning and end of the walk. First we’ll walk along the lagoon on level paths with views of calm water, birds, and plants. During the middle part of the walk, we’ll make a loop through some old and new neighborhoods, and then descend to the beach. Taking advantage of low tide, the route goes between the ocean and cliffs, completing our loop.
Please note that although well socialized dogs on 6 meter leads are welcome, they are not allowed on the beach at this time of year. If you plan to bring your dog, please use your phone directions to navigate the last part of the walk. It is a straightforward road walk back to the start point.
