The Walk
A circular walk from Óbidos passing through Capela de Santo Antão
Moderately challenging for distant and short ascents. There is a viewpoint near the church in Arelho, where we can take a short rest, but NO cafe or WC along the way. Plan accordingly.
Park in the free lot behind Prohibition Bar. We’ll gather at the bus stop across the street from the CGD bank and begin our hike along the northern flank of the Obidos castle wall, cross the RR track and walk a ways along a flat agricultural trail. We’ll skirt around Arelho, through Carregal and out to some orchards and fields near Trás do Outeiro. There’s a short ascent to Capela de Santo Antão with stunning views, after which we have one final descent and ascent back to the parking lot.
SUGGESTIONS:
Bring a mask to cover your nose in case farmers are spraying — one never knows! Use mosquito spray – I’ve been attacked by gigantic bugs in the past. Raingear — it is Portugal, after all.
Timing
The walk is about 13.5 km. and is expected to take about 3-4 hr.
