The Walk

Flat walk through villages, fields and forests

The walk begins at the church in Vale de Maceira, located on the N8 between Caldas da Rainha and Alfiezerão. We follow rural roads through the village of Casal da Ponte. From there we walk along one of the many irrigation canals built in the 1600’s by the Marquis de Pombal to drain what was once the Sea of Alfeizerão. We then turn south into the farmland that was recovered from the marshy sea and follow rural roads along pastures, orchards and eucalyptus forests eventually returning to Vale de Maceira. Much of the walk is on dirt tracks that can be muddy after heavy rain.

Timing

The walk is about 5,75 km and is expected to take about 1.5 hours

Walk location: A short walk (approx. 2 hrs) in woodland near to the village of Vale de Paraíso.

The Walk: The walk is through open and wooded countryside. It is flat and mostly on firm tracks, but sandy in places. Includes some local road walking.
We start in Alfeizerão and walk by Vale Paraíso to Sol Posto, then through cultivated fields and woods back to Vale Paraíso and Alfeizerão.

Timing: The walk is about 7 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs, plus extra for coffee. 

This walk will start from  by the market in Alfeizerao centre.

 

Car Meeting Point: The car park for the ” Campos do Outobro ” next to the market in Alfeizerao.

The Walk

Casal Pardo village and countryside

A fairly level walk with gentle inclines through the local villages and countryside.  Fine views to São Martinho do Porto and the coast.  There is some road walking and the tracks may be muddy and slippery in places after rain.  Good shoes and walking poles recommended.

The walk is about 5,5 km and is expected to take about 1,5 hours

The Walk

Up to the ridge inland from Alfeizerão

A fairly gentle climb from Alfeizerão to Casal Pardo followed by fairly level walking, on roads and tracks, through several small villages.  There are views inland and to the sea.  We then descend along grassy tracks to the valley of the Alfeizerão river.  Initially the descent is quite steep so bring your poles if you use them.  

In wet weather there may be soft mud and puddles. We will be walking through long undergrowth in places.

Timing

The walk is about 6,5 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs

Notes

  • To Pão do Ló café: From Caldas da Rainha take the N8 or A8 to northwards. From the N8 turn left under the motorway flyover signed Alfeizerão. At the motorway roundabout, go straight across. From the A8 turn right at the motorway roundabout. After about 100metres take second turning left; after the turn you will see a petrol station ahead on the right hand side. The café is next door. Ignore the café with the same name on your right as you turn.
  • From São Martinho drive through Alfeizerão and turn right at the Pão do Ló café on the left. You will see a horse riding centre on the left as you leave the centre of Alfeizerão. After the turn you will see a petrol station ahead on the right hand side. The café is next door.

The Walk

This is a level walk through eucalyptus woodland and open fields

The ground is sandy with one stretch of long grass so waterproof footwear is recommended.  There is some walking on quiet roads through villages

Walk from Alfeizerão along the river and return through Cadarroeira on the eastern ridge

The walk follows the river valley for 3 kms (in wet weather, possibly muddy and standing water) with one steep climb and descent to warm up. Then a long uphill to Mosqueiros, followed by about 1 km of fairly quiet road, then uphill to the village of Cadarroeira. From there we descend along a farmers’ track back to a quiet road with a number of blind corners. The final descent should offer fine views of the São Martinho do Porto bay and surrounding countryside.
The tracks will be overgrown in places.

The walk is about 11 km and is expected to take about 3 hours

The Walk

Short walk in woodland in the area of Macarca and Vale de Paraíso.

The walk is through open and wooded countryside. It is mostly flat and mostly on firm tracks, but there will be a short, steep section (slippery and muddy in wet weather) and a small stream to cross so good shoes and walking poles recommended. There is some road walking on quiet roads.
We start in Alfeizerão and walk to Vale Paraíso followed by Sapateira then Macarca. Mostly by cultivated fields and woods.

Timing

The walk is about 7 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs, plus extra for coffee.
