Challenging walk through woodlands

This is quite a hard walk with a long, steep ascent, followed by good walking through woodland and vegetation primarily on a well marked trail. There are also spectacular views on a clear day from the walk high point. From there it is a steep descent back to the village of Torrinhas before making our way back to the start point in the quiet hamlet of Fontes. Walking poles are recommended for those that need them. Total ascent is approximately 430 metres.

The Walk

Beautiful but challenging walk

From the catalogue of walks published by the tourist authority of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros. Walks in the Serra dos Candeeiros

The walk starts in the centre of Reguegno do Fetal. Steady climb to begin on local road , followed by ascent to two different hills.
Total ascent approx. 340 metre. This is a marked trail on rocky tracks with sections of wooden steps ( roped ) . During the climb to the 2nd hill we come across impressive limestone arches which are used by others for rock climbing. There are excellent views at several points across the valley. At the top of the 2nd hill is a monument , before we take the marked path (all downhill) back to the start in Reguegno do Fetal .

The walk is challenging but described by the Tourist Office as fantastic for hikers.

The walk is about 6 km and is expected to take about 3.5 hours

Walk location:  The village of Fontes, the source of the river Lis, between Batalha and Leiria.

Originator:  Morag.

The Walk:  This is a hard walk with a total climb of 450 metres in sections.  There are some steep slopes so care is needed and walking poles are advised as well as good footware.  Bring plenty of water, sun cream and maybe an energy snack.

Timing:  The distance is 9 km taking just over 3.5 hrs.


Car Meeting Point:  At 10:00 am in the Estrada do Lis 8, in Fontes, by the Capela De Nossa Senhora De Lourdes.  I have put a later waiting time because of the distance to travel (50 km from São Martinho do Porto).

There is not a lot of parking space so II can give anyone a lift meeting at 08:45 in Intermarché car park.  I can take up to 3 people.  Send me an email if interested or possibly arrange your own car share.
