The Walk

A circular walk from Salinas to Rio Maior.

This walk starts at Salinas. We first walk along the road to Rio Maior and then turn towards forest paths through forestial landscapes before returning to the salt pans. Your dog must be kept on a short non-extendable leash. You are personally responsible in case of any accident caused by it. Please note that the flag on the map is NOT the starting point. The spikes on the elevation map can be ignored.

Please note that on 03.12.25 we will shorten the walk to 6 km so that those who want to buy olive oil or olive oil based products from the local producer at Fonte da Bica in Salinas (200 m from the start point) can do so before the shop closes at 12:30 hrs.

Timing

The walk is about 7,5 km and is expected to take about 2.0 hrs.

The Walk

A short circular route in the parish of Benedita

This is one of the walks listed on the Percursos Pedestres em Terras de Cister for the Alcobaca Municipality (PR9 ACB-CLD).

It starts and ends at Praça Dr Jose Damasceno Campos, near the center of Benedita. It goes towards Fonte da Senhora and passes by Casal da Azenha. You will enjoy the landscape, among vegetation, water courses, cultivated fields, panoramic views over Vale da Franca, Vila da Benedita and Serra dos Candeeiros.

It’s called the biodiversity walk because it provides a sense of the existing natural flora, fauna and habitats. You will encounter a good variety of native flora such as cork oak, laurel, willow, maritime pine, Portuguese oak, strawberry tree, some chestnut trees and ash trees. Fauna such as wild boar, wild rabbit, mongoose, badger, turtledove, partridge, kite and blackbird, and even recently the red squirrel, populate this area.
