A walk along the Serra do Bouro coast and inland forest.
Wednesday, April 29; 10:00
The Walk: The walk starts by the old discotheque in Foz do Arelho. The first part is heading north along the sea. Mostly on narrow trails and dirt roads for a bit more than an hour. Then we cross Estrada da Atlantica and follow Rua da Pedreiria and unmarked dirt roads through Serra da Bouro back to the Discotheque. The first part of the walk has some ups and downs with moderately steep slopes. Poles are useful for balance and strength if you have them. The second part of the walk is more easy. Dogs on short leash as usual.
This walk starts in the parking area next to the abandon disco near the Fos do Arelho Mirrador. From the Rotunda Ouvir o Mar take the unpaved road between Variante Atlintica and Rua Eng. Paiva e Sousa exiting the traffic circle.
A walk through woodland and hills from Foz do Arelho
The walk follows tracks through the countryside between Foz do Arelho and Serra do Bouro. We cross the main Foz do Arelho road two times. The walk is on good roads and is reasonably level, so it should be passable even in wet weather.
Timing
The walk is about 6 km and is expected to take about 1.5 hrs
* Directions: From Caldas da Rainha, take the minor road which takes you to the center of Foz do Arelho. As you enter the town you will cross a speed bump. Continue for two hundred metres and you will come to a cross roads where you turn right. On the right hand corner you will see a sign to the Cemitério; opposite, on the left hand side you will see some recycling boxes. After the turn the cemetery wall can be seen straight ahead. Coming from the center of Foz do Arelho you will see a sign on the left hand side as you leave the center. Turn left as indicated by the sign.

This is a walk to show the many faces of Foz nature
The walk starts inland by the former discoteca, and goes east on a dirt road. Then into trails along a small creek, in ‘tunnels’ of trees. Then we go west all the way to the sea, and following the cliffs with some ‘good’ ups and downs with nice views to the miradoura in Foz. Bring poles, sun protection and strong legs.
From a subdued start at the Foz cemetery, the walk picks up pace as it courses through the dirt-packed, tree lined path toward the Variante Atlântica (Atalantic road). After a brief stop at the curbside, the walk continues on the other side of the Variante Atlântica with a fairly steep climb up to the grassy plateau above Foz and Serra. On the plateau, walkers meander along dirt/sand/grass tracks before descending to the hamlet of Zambujeiro. After a short interlude on tarmac, the walk then returns to a dirt, tree lined track and climbs back-up to the plateau, passing a picturesque spot with a Parque de Merendas (picnic park) with running stream. The walk is circular, returning to Foz via a different track from the walk start, and descends steeply back into Foz. The track, in parts, could be muddy and puddled if rain has fallen recently; as a result, walking sticks may help those who rely on them.
Timing
The walk is about 7 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs
No coffee stops on the walk, but plenty of cafés in Foz de Arelho

The Environs of Nadadouro’s Water Tower
From the water tower in Nadadouro, to the shores of the lagoon; from lagoon shore to peaks and hamlets in the Parish. Walkers meander along sandy, tree lined tracks, branch strewn paths in forested areas and tramp some tarmacked surfaces, while skirting agricultural allotments. A few moderately steep gradients will be climbed, however, nothing too daunting. Remember to duck while passing under bowed trees on the lagoon shore path. (On a previous walk some years ago, one lady saw stars as she lay on the ground looking up at the sky). In a couple of instances, the track doubles back on itself but for only short distances. The need to pay attention to where one places his/her feet in the forested areas, is imperative – easy to trip and do damage. Also, it is recommended that you protect yourself from the mosquitos !!
The walk is about 7 km and is expected to take about 2 hours
Coffee stop
At least two coffee shops in Nadadouro village and several in Foz – the choice is yours / ours

A walk through tree lined tracks from Nadadouro
From the sandy shore of the lagoon to the suburban streets of Nadadouro via tree lined tracks, the walk is a relatively light stroll in the Nadadouro / Foz area. After the start of the walk at the parking area by the Cais da Lagoa, the walk heads to a small beach and then across a small headland, where the ground underfoot may be a little damp, so good footwear advised. The walk then turns away from the lagoon, climbing up along a tree lined dirt track to the suburban heights of Nadadouro. Once at the top, the walk continues to meander through various types of walking surfaces. In two brief sections, the walkers will back track on themselves. The walk is circular, with walkers descending another tree lined track to where cars are parked.
A walk through woodland and hills from Foz do Arelho

Timing
The walk is about 7 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs
No coffee stops on the walk, but plenty of cafés in the town
