Marked circular route following PR5 CLD – Rota de Alvorninha
The route starts and ends at the Alvorninha Sports pavilion (Caldas da Rainha). It descends towards the dam and its respective stream, to a circular trail through a forest of cork oaks, pines and eucalyptus trees. Once back at the dam there is a choice to return by the same route to the parking lot, or scramble up a small cliff that descends into the parking lot.
From the starting point at the association of Capeleira, we will basically follow the PR11 and the PR14. The walk will start down on a gentle hill along orchards of pear and apple trees with a great view of the castle and the surroundings towards the main parking area in Óbidos and then along the aqueduct back up to Usseira through forests, vineyards and orchards. The path will then take us downhill for a loop in the forest before returning to the starting point. The walk is about 14 km and should take us 3,5 hours. Please note that the walk is not shown completely on the details. Dogs must be kept on a short leash at all times. You are personally responsible for any accidents it may cause.
Cela Velha (between Alfeizerão and Nazaré) up the ridge to Cela Nova
The starting point is Cela Velha in front of the railway station. We walk along a small road to Casais do Espero. In this hamlet, half hidden under the motorway, we go to the other side of the A8 and walk to the Fonte Santa hidden in a small valley. We start climbing the ridge by a dirt road, pass through an apple orchard at the top and follow a path towards Cela Nova. At Cela Nova we take an additional loop to enjoy the valley towards Serra Candeiros. For the last part of this village we follow the road. From Cela we head for Bárrio where we cross the road to Cela Velha, taking a small path through the woods with lovely views. We pass Quinta da Cela Velha before we cross the motorway and return to the start point.

A circular walk from the church in Alvados to Sao Bento, and then back via a different route
The walk starts at the church (“Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação, Alvados) in the village and is signposted (as PR3.1) to Sao Bento. Having stopped briefly in the village, we then take a different route out of the village (following PR3 signs) – this is a longer, fairly steady ascent again with good scenic views. This historical route starts near the tile panel depicting the Battle of Roliça
The route takes you towards the 1st French position, in a small elevation to the north, to head from there to Columbeira. After you leave this village, you have the option to shorten the walk, following the PR1.1 variant alongside the Zambujeira River. Continuing the main route, you begin the ascent to the Picoto Mountains, where you can pay your respects to the tomb of Lieutenant Colonel Lake and discover the 2nd French position. From the Picoto viewpoint, you can look at the surrounding area and gather your strength to return to the route’s starting point through the rural paths and agricultural landscape geometrically designed by human activity. These paths were once crossed by hundreds of soldiers.
The Battle of Roliça was the first battle of the Peninsular War on Portuguese soil, taking place on August 17, 1808. On the morning of that day, Wellesley, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, ordered an all-out attack on the area around the village of Roliça against General Delaborde’s division. However, the army of 15,000 Anglo-Portuguese soldiers could not surround the 4,500 French troops, who withdrew orderly to the high ground of Columbeira, a much stronger defensive position.
During the afternoon, an attack like the one implemented in the morning was put in action. All brigades had to attack in a coordinated fashion for the siege maneuvre to have the desired e etc. However, Colonel George Lake, at the head of the 29th regiment, decided to assault without waiting for the general order, an action that was not successful, leading to his own death. To rescue the regiment, the British Commander-in-Chief gave the general order to attack and his soldiers began the ascent to Columbeira.
At the risk of being surrounded, General Delaborde ordered a withdrawal, heading south towards Lisbon, thus saving most of his forces. He joined the reinforcements coming from the capital and participated in the decisive battle of Vimeiro on August 21, which put an end to the first French invasion of Portugal.
