Walk largely follows PR4 TVD – Rota do Castro The Rota do Castro do Zambujal is a circular route with a length of about 13 km. Fabulous loop south of Torres Vedras with historic site along the way. Mostly on country roads with some good ascents and descents for camino training and a charming town or two. Some unmanicured, prickly, single file sections, challenging for dogs and shorter clothing. Castro do Zambujal is a fortified Copper Age or Chalcolithic settlement dating from the 3rd millennium BC. We are planning for a 20 minute break for exploration and snacks at the historic site.
Car sharing/pooling – due to limited parking at the walk start point, if possible, please go to the car share meeting point for 9:10am behind Good Mart in Caldas da Rainha – GPS coordinates 39.40742586077, -9.153011602699.
It is recommended that dogs are not brought on this walk, however, if they do attend, please keep them on a short lead (including at the archeological site). Poles are useful for those that need them, especially if it’s been raining. Please bring water and any snacks you will need during the hike.
Beautiful but challenging walk . Originally done as a short walk – but due to the steep hills, we now change to a Friday walk.
From the catalogue of walks published by the tourist authority of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros. Walks in the Serra dos Candeeiros
The walk starts in the centre of Reguegno do Fetal. Steady climb to begin on local road , followed by ascent to two different hills. Total ascent approx. 340 metre. This is a marked trail on rocky tracks with sections of wooden steps ( roped ) . During the climb to the 2nd hill we come across impressive limestone arches which are used by others for rock climbing. There are excellent views at several points across the valley. At the top of the 2nd hill is a monument , before we take the marked path (all downhill) back to the start in Reguegno do Fetal .
The walk is challenging but described by the Tourist Office as fantastic for hikers.

The first part is through a housing estate heading towards Pederneira. After crossing the main road to Alcobaça the route follows the edge of the Pederneira ridge with views over Nazaré and along the coast. The road becomes a track and descends towards the river Alcoa. After crossing the main road the route follows a flat track towards Nazaré passing through the Marina before entering the town. A steep climb up to Sitio follows followed by a descent towards Praia de Norte then uphill again through woods and shrubs joining a road at the Lidl and Continente supermarkets,

The walk is about 13 km and is expected to take about 3 hrs Today we will probably do the walk in reverse – ( weather dependent ) & starting with woodland on to Nazare North Beach.

A circular walk from the church in Alvados to Sao Bento, and then back via a different route
The walk starts at the church (“Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação, Alvados) in the village and is signposted (as PR3.1) to Sao Bento. It starts with a fairly steep ascent, along a narrow path and offers good views of the surrounding countryside. Then there is a fairly steady descent into the village of Sao Bento.
Having stopped briefly in the village, we then take a different route out of the village (following PR3 signs) – this is a longer, fairly steady ascent again with good scenic views. The walk concludes with a fairly steep ascent down a rocky path before strolling through the Alvados village back to the start point.
Poles and walking shoes are recommended for those who need them. Bring your own refreshments as there are no coffee stops en route.
Timing
The walk is about 14 km and is expected to take about 4 hrs.

This is quite a hard walk with a long, steep ascent, followed by good walking through woodland and vegetation primarily on a well marked trail. There are also spectacular views on a clear day from the walk high point. From there it is a steep descent back to the village of Torrinhas before making our way back to the start point in the quiet hamlet of Fontes. Walking poles are recommended for those that need them. Total ascent is approximately 430 metres.
The walk descends to a valley – in places the slope is 1:3 and is very uneven and rocky- then makes a fairly steep, ascent to the road on the edge of Pragança followed by a steep ascent – 1:5 in places – to the top. The tracks are clear of vegetation, and in wet weather, will be slippery on the steeper slopes. So good shoes and walking poles are recommended. Also plenty of water in hot weather.
This circular walk is based on the Ecopista track & starts near Bezzera at the location of the old railway station & football field.
The walk start on the easy track. We then ascend to explore the hills with good views across the valley. Returning to the main track – we walk to the end with views to Porto de Mos. A 2nd short ascent takes us to the feature Doorway, before completing the circuit back to the start point.
CAR SHARE as the walk in the Serra dos Candeeiros is the other side of Porto de Mós I suggest optional car share from Alcobaca. Try 08:45? And meet at The car park on the opposite sie of the road to Pingo Doce, BP Burger King and Aldi. (39.5465, -8.9710)
Timing
The walk is about 13 km and is expected to take about 3.5 hours
