The circular 7 km walk starts at the sanctuary of Senhor Jesus of Carvalhal and will take us on sandy tracks and quiet roads through orchards of pear, apple and apricot trees as well as vineyards. There will be a short incline before reaching the villages of Barro Lobo and later Carvalhal before returning to the Parque de Merendas and our start point. From the starting point at the association of Capeleira, we will basically follow the PR11 and the PR14. The walk will start down on a gentle hill along orchards of pear and apple trees with a great view of the castle and the surroundings towards the main parking area in Óbidos and then along the aqueduct back up to Usseira through forests, vineyards and orchards. The path will then take us downhill for a loop in the forest before returning to the starting point. The walk is about 14 km and should take us 3,5 hours. Please note that the walk is not shown completely on the details. Dogs must be kept on a short leash at all times. You are personally responsible for any accidents it may cause.
On this route we start at the car park of the restaurant O Covão dos Musaranhos. We will mainly be walking on forest and rural tracks which lead to the village of Vau and then along the swampy area of the Poça do Vau. We will then for a while follow the PR5 that starts in Vau before returning to the lagoon. This is a fairly easy walk, but we recommend poles for those who are not comfortable walking on gravel and sand. The elevation graph shows some peaks which do not exist on the terrain. For safety reasons dogs must be kept on a short leash. You are personally responsible for your dog.

This historical route starts near the tile panel depicting the Battle of Roliça
The route takes you towards the 1st French position, in a small elevation to the north, to head from there to Columbeira. After you leave this village, you have the option to shorten the walk, following the PR1.1 variant alongside the Zambujeira River. Continuing the main route, you begin the ascent to the Picoto Mountains, where you can pay your respects to the tomb of Lieutenant Colonel Lake and discover the 2nd French position. From the Picoto viewpoint, you can look at the surrounding area and gather your strength to return to the route’s starting point through the rural paths and agricultural landscape geometrically designed by human activity. These paths were once crossed by hundreds of soldiers.
The Battle of Roliça was the first battle of the Peninsular War on Portuguese soil, taking place on August 17, 1808. On the morning of that day, Wellesley, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, ordered an all-out attack on the area around the village of Roliça against General Delaborde’s division. However, the army of 15,000 Anglo-Portuguese soldiers could not surround the 4,500 French troops, who withdrew orderly to the high ground of Columbeira, a much stronger defensive position.
During the afternoon, an attack like the one implemented in the morning was put in action. All brigades had to attack in a coordinated fashion for the siege maneuvre to have the desired e etc. However, Colonel George Lake, at the head of the 29th regiment, decided to assault without waiting for the general order, an action that was not successful, leading to his own death. To rescue the regiment, the British Commander-in-Chief gave the general order to attack and his soldiers began the ascent to Columbeira.
At the risk of being surrounded, General Delaborde ordered a withdrawal, heading south towards Lisbon, thus saving most of his forces. He joined the reinforcements coming from the capital and participated in the decisive battle of Vimeiro on August 21, which put an end to the first French invasion of Portugal.

On this route we will walk through the village of A-dos-Negros located on a ridge in the eastern part of Óbidos and we will come across some of the numerous fountains, wells and ancient washhouses of the region. We will get some nice views especially facing Gracieira and to the northwest towards the water reservoir of the Arnóia River and the Atlantic on the horizon. The route starts towards the Church of Santa Maria Madalena and its beautiful surroundings. It continues on sandy tracks and quiet streets flanked by orchards, vegetable gardens and groves. The houses in the village centre have some unusual features… The route will then lead us downhill to the reservoir and through a small forest back to the village.
Vermelha is a village of about 1200 inhabitants located east of Bombarral. There is a regional bakery which has an outlet in the village center and you can also buy wine at the local adega. The circular walk of ca. 7,5 km will lead us through vineyards, orchards and forests with many lovely views of the countryside. We will walk mostly on rural tracks which sometimes could be uneven, therefore you may need your walking sticks. There is a short, but quite easy ascend when leaving the village, then the trail will be flat before a slight incline up to the main road and another slightly steeper ascend when walking back into the village. Please be reminded that for safety reasons dogs must be kept on a short leash at all times.
The circular 7 km walk starts at the Junta de Freguesia of Olho Marinho. The walk takes us uphill through the historic center of the village towards the Planalto das Cesaredes. On the Cesaredes we will find many dry stone walls resulting from the clearing of land for agriculture. From several points we will have nice views of the landscape and the valley of Óbidos. Please be reminded that for safety reasons dogs must be kept on a short leash at all times.
The walk begins by hugging the northern castle wall. Take a moment to listen to all the birds as we descend to the railroad tracks (no pedestrian crossing – cross at your own risk !) and fertile farmland. Here we join the Capela de Santo André and Antão trails: a long flatland that turns to forests , vineyards and orchards before ascending to the chapel ruins. The last push is back up to the castle where you’ve earned your lunch at your favourite Óbidos café.
