The Walk

An easy walk (total 62 metre ascent ) from Salir do Porto across sand dunes & quiet roads ( 3 km ) to Sao Martinho do Porto & back on the recently rebuilt boardwalk.

The Walk

A walk through high, open countryside along the cliff top

For most of the route the cliff slopes fairly gently to the sea. There will be fine views along the coast and inland – visibility permitting. The ground is firm, but uneven in places.

The walk is about 5 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs

The Walk:  The circular walk is a mixture of woodland & coastal tracks with about 2 km of quiet roads.

Timing:  The walk is about 10 km and is expected to take about 2.5 hrs

Total ascent 200 metres.

Walk location:  A short walk (2 hrs) on the cliff top, from São Martinho do Porto.

The Walk:  The walk initially follows the cliff top then heads inland to Serra Dos Mangues.  From there there is a short stretch of road, then back to the cliff and follow the cliff path back to São Martinho do Porto.

Timing:  The walk is about 5.5 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs

Walk location:  Woods between São Martinho do Porto and Val Paraíso.

The Walk:  A flat walk through farmland and woodland.  There are short stretches of road walking.

Timing:  The walk is about 5 km and is expected to take about 1.5 hrs.

 

Car Meeting Point:  At 10:30 am.  Take the second right turn, on the road  to Famalicão, after the roundabout near the São Martinho Intermarché.  Drive through a small housing estate to the road end.

The Walk:  The walk is completely flat, sandy in parts, through open and wooded countryside and cultivated fields.

Car Meeting Point:  Meet in the Rua General Carmona near the Intermarché supermarket in São Martinho do Porto at 10:15 am.  See the Notes section below for directions.

Coffee Stop:  After the walk: there are many cafés in São Martinho.

Notes:  The supermarket is just off the N242 which by-passes São Martinho do Porto. This is the main road which runs from Alfeizerão to Famalicão via São Martinho do Porto.
If you turn left off the main road at the roundabout, passing the supermarket on your left side, you will find plenty of parking on the road going to the centre.

The Walk: This is a level walk with a mix of track, fields, woods and the local village of Val de Paraíso; with some quiet road walking. Expect to cross sandy or, in wet weather, muddy stretches, long grass and puddles, but much of the walk is firm track with a little bit of road. The walk has only gentle slopes.

Timing: The walk is about 10km and is expected to take about 2.5 hrs, plus extra for coffee.

Walk location:

A short, linear walk (2 hrs) on the cliff top, from São Martinho do Porto to Serra da Pescaria.

 

The Walk:

Car Meeting Point:

Meet at 10:15 am in Serra da Pescaria; by the open spaces on Rua da Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, (next to the café) 50 yards north of the windmill with sail “spokes”, on the high road between São Martinho do Porto and Nazaré. See the Notes section below for instructions to Serra da Pescaria.
We will car share to drive to the walk start point.

Notes:

Directions to Serra da Pescaria
Head for Famalicão, on the main road between São Martinho do Porto and Nazaré. In the centre of Famalicão, turn west / uphill towards the sea, signposted to Serra da Pescaria and Praia de Salgado – the turning is on a bend so drive slowly in order to see it. Once at the top of the ridge, turn left at the cross roads (extant café on the right). The windmill is 100 yards ahead of you. Parking spaces are on the right or left, after about 50 yards, next to a white house with green shutters.

Alternatively, from São Martinho do Porto, head up the road with the market on your left, 2nd turn right after the market, signposted towards Serra dos Mangues. Follow the road until you reach the windmill on Serra da Pescaria – about 6km.
