The Walk

A walk through woodland and hills from Foz do Arelho

The walk follows tracks through the countryside between Foz do Arelho and Serra do Bouro. We cross the main Foz do Arelho road two times, but there is no other road walking. The walk follows earthen tracks which may be muddy. There is a fairly long climb into the the hills of Serra do Bouro with good views of the countryside. The final part of the walk is through woodland.

Timing

The walk is about 6 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs

Notes

  • * Directions: From Caldas da Rainha, take the minor road which takes you to the centre of Foz do Arelho. As you enter the town you will cross a speed bump. Continue for two hundred metres and you will come to a cross roads where you turn right. On the right hand corner you will see a sign to the Cemitério; opposite, on the left hand side you will see some recycling boxes. After the turn the cemetery wall can be seen straight ahead. Coming from the centre of Foz do Arelho you will see a sign on the left hand side as you leave the centre. Turn left as indicated by the sign.

The Walk

A walk by the cliff top and woods at Boa Vista

A walk by the cliff top and woods at Boa Vista near to the Estrada Atlântica between Foz do Arelho and Salir do Porto.

 We will walk a short distance along the Estrada Atlântica (a fast but not busy road) then follow a track to the cliff edge. This track can be muddy and slippery following rain. We continue back to the Estrada Atlântica and cross it to descend into Cidade and then along quiet roads to the woods near to Boa Vista. We leave the woods at the village of Boa Vista and return to the cars.
The tracks in the wood are firm with some sand and some descents with loose stones and ascents. Part of the walk is through long grass so appropriate footwear is advised.

The walk is about 7 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs

The Walk:  The walk is initially along quiet roads through Granja, then Espinheiro, followed by road and track to Zambujeiro and then a fairly steep, short climb through part of the Serra do Bouro.  Quiet roads & open fields and woodland.

From Caldas da Rainha take the fast road to Foz do Arelho (through the industrial estate). At the rocky roundabout turn right, signposted Serra do Bouro. You pass a quarry entrance on your left and about 1km further on you come to a cross roads. Go straight across – sign posted São Martinho do Porto, Igreja & Cemitério – and after 200 metres turn into a parking area on the left just before the church. There is a bandstand in the parking area. This is the meeting point. The church is in a place called Granja.

From São Martinho do Porto go to Salir do Porto and leave the main road by turning left after the roundabout to go through Casais do Salir. You descend into the valley and drive through woodland. As you exit the woodland you will see a church on your right and a village sign for Granja. Turn right into a parking area just after the church. There is a bandstand in the parking area. This is the meeting point. If you come to a cross roads turn round.

Walk location:  The pine and eucalyptus woods in the Caldas da Rainha valley near Serra do Bouro.

The Walk:  This is a circular, woodland walk to Boa Vista. The first part is flat with some gentle hill climbing on the second half. Underfoot the ground is sometimes firm and other times loose sand and puddles.  There is some walking on quiet roads.

Timing:  The walk is about 9.5 km and is expected to take about 2.5 hrs.

Walk location: A 6km walk (2 hrs) through the open heath land near Serra do Bouro.

The Walk: After a level section along a quiet road and track the walk ascends through heath land along beaten earth tracks – the first 400 metres of the ascent are fairly steep – then the slope becomes fairly gentle with views inland along the Caldas valley. The second half descends to a small village (Cabeça da Vela) with some quiet road walking.
Bring water and sun cream.

Timing: The walk is about 6 km and is expected to take about 2 hrs.

There is a bandstand in the parking area. This is the meeting point.

From São Martinho do Porto go to Salir do Porto and leave the main road by turning left after the roundabout to go through Casais do Salir. Keep straight on and descend into the valley driving through woodland. As you exit the woodland you will see a church on your right. Turn right into a parking area just after the church. Walk location: The village of Espinheira and slopes of Serra do Bouro.

 

The Walk: The walk is initially along quiet roads through wooded countryside and a village, followed by a short stretch on a main road. We then make a fairly steep climb up the slopes of the Serra do Bouro – good views – and descend fairly gently to a second village with quiet road walking back to the start point.

Timing: The walk is about 5.5 km and is expected to take about 1.5 hrs.

Walk location:  A long walk (2.5 hrs) by the cliff top and woods at Boa Vista near to the Estrada Atlântica between Foz do Arelho and Salir do Porto.

The Walk:  We will walk a short distance along the Estrada Atlântica (a fast but not busy road) then follow a track to the cliff edge. We continue back to the Estrada and cross it to descend to Cidade and walk along quiet roads to the woods near Boa Vista. We follow tracks through the woods and eventually return to Boa Vista and the cars. The tracks on the first part may be muddy and slippery and then we will walk through long, wet grass for a short distance. After that the tracks are firm with some sand and some descents and ascents.

Timing:  The walk is about 10 km and is expected to take about 2.5 hrs.

 

Car Meeting Point:  Meet at the lookout point (Parque de Merendas) off the Estrada Atlântica on the Foz do Arelho side of Boa Vista at 09:30 am.
