spo18L – Long Walk – Headland & Woods

Walk location: The headland at Salir do Porto followed by pine and eucalyptus woods at Boa Vista.

Originator: John; based on walk by Antonio José; Viewranger

The Walk: We take a sandy track, which runs behind the swimming pool, uphill to the headland behind Salir do Porto. Firm tracks take us across the Estrada Atlântica into the woods to the south where some of the paths may be overgrown. We head back to the cliffs just before Boa Vista and follow some narrow fishermen’s paths close to the sea until we reach the sea opening to the bay of São Martinho do Porto. The path here is loose sand and there is a short climb and descent into a valley at the sea opening. There is a scramble to the ridge that leads to the ruined chapel and a steep, sandy descent to the customs house by the edge of the bay.

Some of the tracks have soft sand and there will be muddy stretches so wear waterproof shoes.
I haven’t walked some of the tracks by the sea so we may need to retrace our steps in a couple of places in order to find our way.

Timing: The walk is about 13 km and is expected to take about 3 hrs.

Car Meeting Point: The beach car park at Salir do Porto at 09:30 pm. See the Notes section below for directions.
